Initially an organisation founded in 1999, it became a party in 2016. The president is the Alain Escada, a Belgian activist and former executive of the Front nouveau de Belgique (FNB), a party which has merged since then with the Belgian National Front. Catholic-integrist and traditionalist, it was especially visible around 2013 and the demonstrations against same-sex marriage. It opposes abortion, assisted reproductive technology (ART), surrogacy and gender theory as well. It is also active in Belgium and Switzerland.
In 2017, it created a European party called “Coalition for Life and Family”, joined by some members of parliament from Austria, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Spain. However, this organisation has not shown any recent sign of activity.
Civitas is however still very much active, and nowadays especially around the denunciation of a “sanitary dictatorship” in the context of the Covid-19 pandemics.
